Making your move to Microsoft 365

Where Is Microsoft 365 Data Stored?

One of the questions on many businesses lips is that of business data: where will it be stored? Microsoft has a number of data centers located all around the world, including Australia. Each one meets the most stringent of requirements to ensure that every piece of data is kept as secure as the next. They align and are in complete compliance with international data protection laws that extend to transfer and storage of customer data.

Traditionally, getting your on-premise infrastructure up to scratch with certifications like Information Security Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) was difficult. Outsourcing your hardware means that this is taken care of, no more maintaining, and updating hardware and software.

What Should You Do Before Moving To Microsoft 365?

The best course of action when choosing to migrate to Microsoft 365 is to do so with the help of a certified Microsoft partner, such as Powernet, who will handle the details of the migration for you. You can do it yourself, but a partner has ample experience in this type of deployment and will be able to guide you through the process with ease.

Before migrating to Microsoft 365, it’s wise to do an audit of your business to determine what needs to be put in place before you can move forward with your new business solution. If your business is already running on Office 365 for business, adding licenses for Microsoft 365 is a simple process. You can assign licenses to all employees in the business or only a select few. Same as if you are starting from scratch, not leveraging from Office 365.

We’ve put together a basic Microsoft 365 migration checklist that will make it easier for you to make the move with full confidence:

  • Review the Microsoft 365 licensing requirements
  • Ensure that your current systems can support the migration as well as the associated software
  • Is your business ready to move to the cloud? What systems or servers currently prevent this from happening?
  • Ensure that your Internet connectivity can support the migration and the running of the business solution
  • Do an audit of all the software you currently use and determine what can be replaced by Microsoft 365, and what needs to remain and be integrated
  • Do an audit of current data security measures and whether or not this can simply merge into the new deployment
  • Determine what apps you will need to deploy once migrated
  • Determine the priority of apps that need to be deployed
  • Do an audit on the number of employees you have within the business and what devices need to be supported by the migration
  • Ensure that all employees perform a backup of their files and folders and that all data is backed up too
  • Create a filing solution, folder system and document management system, and share this with your team to familiarize everyone with the structure before they have to work with it
  • Create a system of governance that must be followed by all employees at all times
  • Ensure there is a proper communication support plan in place for employees to make use of if they need any assistance or are experiencing difficulty
  • Arrange team training and workshops to educate all employees on best practice, operations and how to navigate your systems, files and folders
  • Host a few trial runs to help ease the team into the process
  • Set a migration date and ensure one last time that everything is backed up before you start the process
  • Once complete, do a test to ensure that all the apps and systems function the way they’re supposed to
